Chris Guillebeau from SideHustleSchool.com is a tremendous advocate for the lower risk brand of entrepreneurship we cover on the show.

He’s a New York Times bestselling author of, The $100 Startup, Side Hustle, The Art of Non-Conformity and other books, and he’s hosted over 1,100 episodes of The Side Hustle School podcast.

As someone who has also built his business around helping others find and implement their own side hustle ideas, it was about time we had a meeting of the side hustle minds.

How do you start a side hustle?

Well we can talk about side hustle ideas and marketing tactics until we’re blue in the face, but in studying my catalog of past interviews, a few common traits popped up over and over again.

I’ve compiled those into this 7-step guide to starting a side hustle.

That show was a hit, so I’m returning to that format for another round.

Some of these will you have kicking yourself not thinking of it yourself, and some of these are 6-figure businesses you could literally start tomorrow.

Whether you’re looking for a side hustle or want to have a more enjoyable 9-5, there are several ways you can go about becoming your own boss.

Just imagine … no more clocking in, no more mean bosses, and no more incompetent coworkers to deal with.

Sounds like bliss, right?

But how exactly do you make it a reality? What do you need to do to be your own boss?

Before we begin, I should note that the single BEST way to make your side hustle feel official is to get paid. Go sell something, seriously.

But I also understand that many people — myself include — often want some level of “establishment” before they feel comfortable saying they’re open for business.

I opened my first LLC while I was still in college and really had no idea what I needed it for. But it felt good, and if I’m being honest, made me feel smart and important too. And later I got plenty of use out of it.
