70: Software as a Side Hustle: Mistakes, Market Validation, and Massive Scale

I’m excited to welcome Spencer Haws back to the show this week!

Longtime listeners may remember Spencer from episode 18 of the show, where he gave us a step-by-step walkthrough of how he builds profitable niche sites from scratch.

But in addition to his niche site empire, Spencer is also an accomplished software entrepreneur. His popular Long Tail Pro software powers the keyword research for thousands of customers.

Is WP Engine Worth It? My Experience and Why I Moved On

As the traffic to Side Hustle Nation has grown (over 16,000 visits per month this summer, compared with about 4000 visits per month last summer), I began to get frustrated with the slow load times both for the user-facing site and my admin dashboard.

To be sure, this is a great problem to have.

Since Day 1, the site had been running on a cheap shared hosting account at Web Hosting Buzz. They’re essentially a commoditized hosting provider, and it cost around $70 a year for unlimited sites.

67: The Hustler’s Path: From Freelance to Agency to Product

It’s been quite a while since our last discussion of a software business here on the show. Even though we touched briefly on Long Tail Pro with Spencer Haws, I really have to go all the way back to Josh Isaak in episode 12 to find an in-depth breakdown of a Software as a service business.
So that means today’s conversation with Garrett Moon from CoSchedule is long overdue! After all, the low incremental cost and recurring revenue potential of the SaaS model is such a trendy holy grail of business right now.

65: How to Reverse Engineer Your Blog to Get Paying Clients (and 10x Your Hourly Rate)

Corrina Gordon-Barnes is a sought-after coach and mentor, and today she shares with Side Hustle Nation exactly how she built her business from the ground up.

There are some surprising turns and some eye-opening responses in this one, as I ask Corrina about how she prices her services, how she landed her first clients, how she’s scaling her business, and how she made blogging work as an effective marketing channel.

64: The Path to Passive Income on Udemy – Even If You’re Not an Expert

I’m excited to welcome Scott Britton from Life-LongLearner.com and The Competitive Edge podcast to The Side Hustle Show.
In this chat, we talk about how he built up a passive income stream from online courses on Udemy, which gave him the freedom to travel and live in South America for several months.

He’s a super smart guy and really delivers a ton of excellent tips in this episode. I think you’ll like it!

60: Punching Fear in the Face and Escaping Average, with Jon Acuff

Through his best-selling books, Jon Acuff may be one of the most prominent advocates for the side hustle “brand” of entrepreneurship.

Jon’s a sought-after author, speaker, and consultant, with a share of side hustle stories to tell. While some flopped, one was almost an overnight success: his Stuff Christians Like blog. We talk about all that and more during our call.

Are Podcast Transcriptions Worth It?

Is it worth it to transcribe your podcast?

That’s a question I’ve been wrestling with, and doing some testing on, so wanted to share my thoughts and results.

First of all, let’s clarify what we’re talking about. A podcast transcription is just the written record of your episode.

There are some distinct perceived advantages of providing transcriptions:

It’s respectful of your followers’ time, when they still want to consume your content but don’t have the 20-45 minutes necessary to listen.

56: From Miserable and $100,000 in Debt to Self-Employed Author, Speaker, and Coach

This edition of The Side Hustle Show is probably one of the most inspiring yet. I’m joined by Kimanzi Constable, who shares his story about the struggle of entrepreneurship and his dream of becoming a writer.

We talk about the specific steps he took to get out of debt, build an audience of buyers for his books. This is powerful one because Kimanzi opens up how serious he needed to make some changes in his life.

Is Quora a Good Source of Traffic?

I’ve been running a little experiment lately to see if I could generate some traffic from Quora.

Quora is a question and answer site that generally seems to have a higher caliber of participants than say, Yahoo Answers.

My idea was to find questions related to side hustling, drop in a helpful answer and a relevant link, and see if the traffic flowed back to SideHustleNation.com.

Usually Hustling, Occasionally Social
